FAQs
Is a Siberian Husky the right breed for me?
If you love fur everywhere, have an escape proof yard, are willing to exercise your companion even - or especially - when it is cold outside, don’t mind your yard having craters like the moons surface, then MAYBE they are the breed for you. While they are beautiful, intelligent and amicable dogs, they are not for everyone and not a great choice for first time dog owners. They can be destructive. They can howl when bored. They are not a guard dog or ‘one man dog’. They cannot be trusted off leash. Please do as much research as possible before deciding this is the breed for you!
Are Siberian Huskies good with children?
In most instances, Siberian Huskies make great family pets. Historically, they grew up with the Chukchi tribes and it was necessary for them to be good with the tribes children. However, you should NEVER leave a child unattended with a dog of any breed.
Are Siberian Huskies good with small pets?
Siberian Huskies have a high prey drive, and in general, they are not to be trusted with cats or other small pets. Of course, there are ‘success stories’ where people have successfully reared a pup to be friendly to their cat - but don’t count on it!
Are Siberian Huskies a healthy breed?
Siberians are generally a healthy breed. Reputable breeders will perform health testing on their dogs including an eye examination by a canine ophthalmologist. Occasionally you may see hip dysplasia, but with careful breeding, the instances are fairly low. Siberian Huskies are prone to zinc deficiency, which can be managed with a supplement, if needed.
Are Siberian Huskies high energy dogs?
While Siberian Huskies love cuddling on the couch, they are an active breed and were bred to work! A bored Siberian will become destructive, so it is important that you provide you dog with adequate exercise! Playing in the backyard will not be enough, so be prepared to walk, jog, or participate in dog sports with your Siberian Husky! With enough patience and training, you can also participate in agility or obedience.
How can I exercise my Siberian Husky?
Siberian Huskies love to run and love to pull! Once they are old enough, you can run them in harness including on a scooter, bike, rig or sled! They also make good jogging and hiking companions!
What kind of fencing do I need?
Siberian Huskies are notorious escape artists, and as such adequate fencing is required. The recommendation is a 6ft high fence with no gaps at the bottom. If you have a digger or a climber, you may also need to consider additional security such as buried fencing or hot wire.
Can I let my Siberian Husky off leash?
Siberian Huskies LOVE to run and explore and are generally nomadic in nature. As such, it is not a wise idea to allow your Siberian Husky to play off leash unless in a secured area. Even with the most trustworthy of dogs, you just never know when their prey drive may kick in!
When should I spay/neuter my Siberian Husky?
Current research is suggesting that spay and neuter should be performed once the dog has reached maturity. This allows for the growth plates to close and will minimize the risk of injury. It is possible to perform a vasectomy or an ovary sparing spay at any age to allow the dogs to retain their hormones while still sterilizing them so you don’t have to deal with unwanted puppies!
